Sky lanterns: the moment everyone shares

A sky lantern – also called a Chinese lantern, Chinese air lantern, flying lantern or Kongming lantern – is a small paper hot-air balloon. A burner at its base heats the air inside, so the lantern rises gently into the night sky. A few dozen glowing lights climbing together, and every guest looking up at the same moment: that is the magic.

We only sell lanterns from our own brand, TellementHappy®: rice paper, bamboo ring, no metal wire, 90 × 60 cm when unfolded, delivered with their burners and shipped from France.

How to choose your sky lanterns

  • White: the wedding classic, elegant in night-time photos.
  • Red heart: Valentine’s Day, proposals, anniversaries.
  • Colours (pink, blue, green, red): birthdays, family parties, gender reveals.

Plan one lantern for every two to four guests and release them in small groups: the show lasts longer and everyone has time to film.

Are sky lanterns legal in the UK?

Sky lanterns are legal to buy and sell in the UK. However, more than 200 local authorities – including all 22 councils in Wales – ban releases on land they own, and many venues do not allow them. How do I release a sky lantern safely?

Choose a still, dry evening and a wide open space away from trees, buildings, power lines, crops and airfields. Hold the lantern open with a second person, light the burner, wait until it pulls upwards, then let go gently.
